HIPAA Privacy Requirements for Online Appointments

For HIPAA compliance you are required to make every effort to be in a private location during your online appointment — without friends, family members, or others present in the same room.

The only exception is someone who would normally accompany you to in-person appointments for reason such as dementia or communication facilitation and who you have given expressed permission to be present.

Please take this seriously. Psychiatric appointments involve protected health information and confidential clinical discussion. Your privacy — and Dr. DePalma’s compliance obligations — depend on it.

To participate in a telehealth appointment you will need the following:

Current Telehealth Regulations — What You Should Know

Telehealth regulations for psychiatric care have evolved significantly in recent years. The following reflects current verified federal and Arizona policy as of 2026 for an online psychiatrist Scottsdale or online psychiatrist Phoenix.

While most routine medications can be prescribed remotely under the same clinical standards as in-person care, controlled substances remain subject to a distinct federal regulatory framework.

The DEA and HHS have issued a Fourth Temporary Extension of COVID-19 Telemedicine Flexibilities for the Prescription of Controlled Medications, extending current telemedicine flexibilities through December 31, 2026.

What this means for One Psychiatry patients:

  • Medication management appointments — including most non-controlled medications — are available via telehealth for approved established patients
  • Controlled substance prescriptions including stimulant medications for ADHD require that clinicians be physically located in the same state as their patients — Dr. DePalma is Arizona-licensed and Arizona-based, so this requirement is met for all Arizona patients
  • Ketamine treatment requires in-person attendance at the Scottsdale office — this is not available via telehealth under any circumstances
  • Regulations in this area continue to evolve — Dr. DePalma’s practice stays current with all applicable state and federal requirements with focus on online psychiatrist Scottsdale and Online psychiatrist Phoenix regulatory updates.
