Ketamine Therapy in Scottsdale, AZ
Ketamine Treatment in Treatment Resistant Depression & Access to Rare 360 Degree Care
Why IM Ketamine :
Many studies have found that ketamine introduced IM or IV can rapidly reduce symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD) and treatment-resistant depression (TRD), often within 1–4 hours after administration. This is a significant breakthrough for individuals who have not responded to traditional antidepressants.
At One Psychiatry PLLC Dr DePalma administers Ketamine to patients intramuscularly to the deltoid muscle ( in normal speech , this is basically a shot of individually dosed Ketamine via the shoulder muscle).
Research indicates ketamine promotes brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) release and enhances synaptic connectivity. This may underlie its ability to help patients “shift out” of rigid, depressive, or trauma-driven thought patterns.
360 degree care:
Dr DePalma's training and experience as a fully Residency trained, Board Certified, Physician Psychiatrist (and ACLS trained)- who also offers Ketamine treatment - allows for a very rare full and comprehensive Psychiatric treatment experience that is almost impossible to find at the current time.
Dr. DePalma is prepared to manage not just your Ketamine Administration and treatment, but all of the profound Psychological Aspects associated with Ketamine treatment as well as managing your psychiatric symptoms AND medications. This allows for addressing all aspects in Ketamine treated patients of Treatment Resistant Depression , management issues in the context of Ketamine , Psychological navigation as well as relevant medical work up and evaluation when called for.
Also, unlike some "ketamine mills" and "drip dens" who leave patients in rooms (sometimes several patients in a room) to be checked up on periodically by minimally trained technicians, the Dr will be accessible at all times - even while you are in recliner during the quiet relaxation period of the session.
IMPORTANT:
*note that all new patients who desire ketamine treatment must first schedule and complete an Initial Evaluation with Dr DePalma.

IM Ketamine administration offers several advantages to oral and IV:
Why we currently do not offer oral/sublingual Ketamine treatment:
- Fast onset: Relief can begin within 10–15 minutes.
- Predictable absorption: Avoids variability of oral dosing.
- Convenience: No IV line required; less clinical infrastructure needed.
- Accessibility: Generally Lower cost and simpler logistics compared to infusions.
Why we currently do not offer oral/sublingual Ketamine treatment:
- Limited clinical trials: There are only a few studies and case series on sublingual use and most are small-scale low power studies. IM Ketamine administration on the other hand has robust clinical research evidence, well known pharmacokinetics and predictable bioavailability, greatly increasing the chances your treatment will be effective.
- Bioavailability of oral/sublingual is highly variable compared to IM/IV: Estimated at 15-30% depending on formulation, duration under the tounge and individual metabolism differences.
- Other: Existing Data is from unreliable sources and there are few standardized protocols causing dosage to vary widely among clinics.

Q: What is the first step in scheduling my Ketamine Treatment ?
A: The first step is scheduling an Initial Intake Evaluation Appointment using the "INITIAL INTAKE EVALUATION" button below.
Most patients wait and schedule the actual Ketamine Sessions and decide on treatment packages during or after this Initial Intake Evaluation Appointment. Or if you are a current patient just message Dr. DePalma through the Healthie portal indicating you'd like to discuss this treatment.
Alternatively, if you'd like to check to see which upcoming days of the week are available for your sessions, you can request an informational phone call using the request button below on this page and discuss this during that informational phone call.
Q: Is Ketamine Addictive?
A: When administered in a medical setting and at therapeutic doses, ketamine therapy is not considered addictive. In a controlled clinical environment—under the supervision of a licensed medical provider--the risk of developing dependence is extremely low. The doses used for treating depression, anxiety, or PTSD are much lower and given far less frequently than those associated with recreational or misuse patterns. Ketamine does have a potential for abuse when used repeatedly or in high, non-medical doses, such as those found in illicit settings. In the case of the high profile death of a Hollywood actor (M Perry) for example the concentrations found in his blood were on the order of 40-50 times ( notably buprenorphine was also present) higher than those used in psychiatric treatment.
Q: How is Dr. DePalma’s approach different?
He combines psychiatric expertise with Ketamine therapy for a fully integrated mental health treatment experience. Most Ketamine treatment in Phoenix and Scottdsale area is administered by technicians with minimal Psychiatric and medical training, allowing little if any interaction or supervision from a Physician Psychiatrist. It is Dr DePalma's belief that such organizations are doing a disservice in the long term to patients. This is why Dr DePalma administers and oversees all Ketamine Treatment sessions personally.
Q: Is Ketamine therapy safe?
A: Yes, when administered under medical supervision by a qualified ACLS certified healthcare professional like Dr. DePalma.
Q: What if I am currently on an antidepressant? Should I stay on it?
A: If you are currently on an oral antidepressant you feel is beneficial (even if partially) you may typically continue this medication regimen during treatment with exception of some medication types. The details of this can be addressed during the Initial Intake Evaluation or if you would like you may use the button below this section to request an informational phone call during which you can also ask questions regarding your medication (if it is the physician who calls you) or relay this question to him (if it is an assistant who calls you).
Q: Does insurance cover Ketamine therapy?
Most likely not; it’s best to check with your insurance provider however, despite the large body of evidence for psychiatric use, Ketamine is used “off label” for Psychiatric purposes at this time.
Q: What if I come to an Initial Intake Evaluation Appointment but I am told I am not a candidate for Ketamine Treatment for medical reasons or not meeting treatment resistant depression criteria?
A: In such a case you would be given the option to pursue other treatment options with Dr DePalma as recommended for you based on your medical/psychiatric status. And, if you decide you'd like to not pursue treatment options with Dr DePalma other than ketamine (but are not approved for it) in this case Dr DePalma will refund you a two thirds (2/3) refund ($200) thus you will have only paid $100 for the Drs time and evaluation in such case.
Q: Will I need to arrange transportation home from the Ketamine Therapy Sessions?
A: Yes, for safety reasons, patients must arrange a ride home from a responsible adult for each Ketamine Therapy Session. Although, this is not necessary for the Initial Evaluation Appointment.
Q: Are there any Zero Interest Financing options?
A: Yes - See Below in the "Financing" Section
Q: Will I need to stop my current medications?
Not necessarily—Dr. DePalma can manage your medications to ensure they complement your Ketamine therapy.
Q: Are HSA Cards Accepted?
A: Yes

- Design: Repeated ketamine infusions (6 doses over 2 weeks)
- Findings: Patients receiving multiple infusions had more robust and sustained reductions in depression scores than those receiving a single dose. At day 28, 70.8% of ketamine-treated patients were still classified as responders (vs. 15.4% for midazolam).
2. Chilukuri et al. (2014)
Title: Acute antidepressant effects of intramuscular ketamine equivalent to intravenous ketamine
DOI: 10.4103/0253-7176.127258
- Design: Randomized controlled comparison of intramuscular vs intravenous ketamine (single sub-anesthetic dose) in patients with depression
- Findings: Both IM and IV ketamine produced rapid and significant reductions in depressive symptoms within hours to days, with comparable short-term antidepressant efficacy. Symptom improvement was sustained at early follow-up (several days), supporting IM administration as a clinically viable alternative route for rapid antidepressant effect.

Journal: Journal of Affective Disorders, 243, 486–495
DOI: 10.1016/j.jad.2018.10.003
- Type: Meta-analysis of 11 studies (IV ketamine)
- Conclusion: Repeated ketamine infusions (4–6 sessions) led to higher response rates and longer-lasting antidepressant effects, with many patients maintaining benefit for 2–4 weeks post-treatment.
- Quote from paper:
“Durability of antidepressant response was consistently greater in studies that used repeated infusions compared to single-dose studies.”
