Medication Management

Medication can be an important part of adult ADHD treatment, but choosing the right medication requires careful evaluation.

Dr. DePalma considers each patient’s symptoms, medical history, psychiatric history, goals, side effect concerns, and co-occurring conditions before recommending medication. Stimulant and non-stimulant options may be considered depending on the individual clinical picture.

Follow-up visits allow treatment to be adjusted over time based on response, tolerability, functioning, and overall progress.

Psychotherapy and Skills-Based Treatment

For many adults, especially those diagnosed later in life, medication alone does not address the full impact of ADHD.

Psychotherapy can help patients understand long-standing patterns of avoidance, shame, emotional reactivity, disorganization, procrastination, and self-criticism. Skills-based work may focus on routines, planning, task initiation, emotional regulation, communication, and follow-through.

This can be especially helpful for adults who have spent years feeling “lazy,” “inconsistent,” or “not living up to their potential” without understanding the role ADHD may have played.

Combined Treatment

Many patients benefit from a combination of medication management and psychotherapy.

Medication may help improve focus, follow-through, and impulse control. Psychotherapy can help address the behavioral patterns, emotional consequences, and life disruption that often develop around years of untreated ADHD.
